WHO IS A GENIUS?
The definition of the
word ‘genius’ is gradually changing today, due to insight discoveries. We use
to think that a genius is someone who has a very high intelligence Quotient
(IQ), good memory and other attributes. But today, that has changed. I would
rather define a genius as a man with would rather define a genius as a man with
unmatchable drive for accomplishments, one who is not easily deterred by
obstacles. A restless and persistent man, who is determined to reach his goal
at all cost. Most people who are regarded as genius today are know for such
massive drive. Talk about Thomas Edison who invented the electric bulb for
instance, he was asked how many times he failed, he said, “I never failed once,
I only learnt how many ways it cannot be done. “ That is a genius! One who
refuses to stop attempting or give up or take ‘no’ for an answer. In my own
opinion, the greatest failure in life is the failure to make attempts,
especially when one is required to attempt an issue over and over again.
Ingenuity goes beyond
school performance. There are people who were distinction students in school
but ended up either on the floor or living an average life. Some others who
never made distinction in school woke up one day with a drive to make it and
today they are on top.
I am not trying to hid
the importance of formal education, not at all! Getting high grades in school
is very good, but I want to say that beyond earning good grades in school, you
must have self drive.
I have observed that
most people who make good grades in school soon settle down with a sense of
achievement. But someone who was once at the tail of the class, with a strong
inner drive can one day pick up the pieces of his failure and turn it into
success. That is why I often tell people if you have not failed before, you may
never wake up with a drive to succeed in life.
A genius is not
necessarily a professional but a versatile fellow in various fields of life and
sometimes recognized as an authority in those fields. We were told that
Benjamin Franklin had only two years of formal education, yet there is a day
dedicated to him in America, a holiday that is observed yearly because of the
positive impact he made in that country. That means the man is worth the
economy of that nation for one day. Think about that! He was not a president;
he simply rose up as a genius. He made major contributions in different fields,
including medicine.
WHAT ARE THE DAILY
PRACTICES OF A GENIUS?
.
Ø
A Genius
Embraces Each Day with Optimism: His
mentality is “today will be better than yesterday.” He does not sit down around
failure. He sees every step as adding to or improving his efforts towards the
achievement of his ultimate goal. That is the kind of attitude that makes a man
like to go to work so as to improve on what he could not do well the previous
day. There is so much to do that we don’t have time to concentrate on the past,
so embrace each day with optimism! Let your soul be driven towards the things
you have to achieve in life.
Ø
He is not
an Evader: A genius is a confronter; he confronts his work until it is
accomplished. He works as a crusader because he sees the task as something that
must be accomplished. He doesn’t try, he
rather get things done; he confronts every issue that comes his way as a
conqueror. You don’t see him frown at any assignment or challenge, rather he
approaches them with attitude of “This thing can be done, it must be done” and
it’s get done.
Ø
He creates
and pursue new things: He doesn’t settle with routine. He pursues and craves
for new things. Whatever is not new does not excites him, that is to say, he
wants to create a new order. You can’t make a mark if you are not looking for something
new. If you are the type of worker who returns an assignment to your boss the
same way it was given to you, then, you are not a genius, you are a failure,
you are not needed there. It also means you are a routine worker and you know
what happens to a routine worker. The system soon outgrows him.
Ø
A genius
seeks to improve daily: He improves on his work, human relations and every
other area. He looks out for his areas of lapses and weaknesses, works hard to
discover his shortcomings and deficiencies and then takes steps to improve on
them before anybody discovers it. A genius doesn’t wait to be corrected, not
for pride, but because of his commitment to self-improvement.
Don’t be a routine
worker, confront everyday and every problem that comes your way as a conqueror,
crave for improvement, seek for new things and you will find yourself on the
way to ingenuity.
